Recently, HUAWEI Philippines revealed plans to introduce three new devices as part of their lineup to kickstart the new year. These include the HUAWEI MateBook D 16 2024, HUAWEI MatePad Pro 13.2-inch, and HUAWEI FreeClip.
HUAWEI Philippines provided us with a review unit of the HUAWEI MateBook D 16 2024, allowing us to explore its new features and share our experience with this device.
Today, many 16-inch laptops struggle with bulkiness and subpar specifications. Finding a balance between size and performance remains a challenge in this market segment.
The new HUAWEI MateBook D 16 2024 sets itself apart by delivering a premium lightweight design, high-performance hardware, improved battery life, and intelligent productivity features. Ideal for working professionals, personal tasks, or school assignments, this device seamlessly combines portability with exceptional performance.
So, let’s dive in to the review.
Unboxing
The packaging box of the HUAWEI MateBook D 16 2024 comes in a sturdy corrugated carton box with a few printed elements—a HUAWEI logo and a graphic representation of the laptop.
The box also includes a convenient plastic handle, making it easy to carry after your purchase.
Upon opening the carton box, the laptop is encased in plastic and securely protected by a tailor-made Styrofoam packaging. The power brick is neatly housed in its own separate compartment box.

Design and Build Quality
The overall body construction and design of the MateBook D 16 2024 remain largely unchanged, yet it still continues to maintain its impressive and aesthetically appealing appearance as a premium laptop.
The new MateBook D 16 2024 will only offer the Mystic Silver color option, a departure from its predecessor that also offered the Space Gray variant.
The Mystic Silver color variant showcases a sleek, shiny aluminum brush metallic finish across the entire body that emits a vibrant and appealing grey tones. Utilizing an alloy-based material for most parts, except the bezel which is crafted from durable plastic. This contributes to the laptop’s lightweight design, ensuring effortless portability for this 16-inch device.
It has a weight of approximately 1.68kg, making it comfortable to bring along even with one hand. The laptop measures at 356.7mm wide by 248.7mm deep, and its slim profile measures just 18mm in thickness.
Despite having a conservative aesthetic and color scheme, the new HUAWEI MateBook D 16 2024 effortlessly blends into any office or school setting making it stand out maintaining its distinctive presence.
The top cover has a raised HUAWEI logo with a shiny silver finish that adds a classy touch to the laptop’s branding.
Going to the underside of the MateBook D 16 2024, the aluminum finish surface is held in place with screws all around it. Two elongated grilles are incorporated for ventilation and two bottom-firing stereo speaker grilles are found on the sides.
The built-in speakers produce a loud and clear sound especially the vocals, yet they fall a bit short of expectations regarding volume. Additionally, the bass needs more improvement. For better sound performance, I’d recommend using a high-quality external Bluetooth or wired speaker.
The laptop features a raised rubber feets with one long foot and two at each corner. It aids the laptop to keep steady on any flat surfaces and prevent it from sliding. It can also help the laptop stay cool by letting heat dissipate faster, keeping it at a safe operating temperature.
Just a reminder, any modification on the laptop may void your warranty. It would be better to go to their service center if you wish to change or upgrade any components.
For the ports, the left side holds a single USB-C port for charging, data transmission, and DisplayPort. Then you have a faster USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 port, HDMI output for external display, and a 3.5mm audio jack to connect your wired headphones or external speakers.
Only a single USB-A 2.0 port will be available on the right side for connecting your peripherals.
Two microphones are located on the front side of the laptop, near the cover lid. On the back edge, the device maintains a clean appearance with only the black hinge present.
When you open the cover lid, you’ll notice that the long bar hinges are made of durable polycarbonate material in a matte black finish. These bar hinges are really stiff controlling the laptop’s opening and closing, ensuring it stays at your preferred angle and position of the screen.
These bar hinges are engineered to open the display to lay completely flat at a 180-degree angle. This feature proves useful if you need to share the screen across the table, offering additional information that could contribute to the discussion.
The laptop features rear external grille vents discreetly placed near the edges of the bar hinge. In the new HUAWEI MateBook D 16 2024, the brand is now fitting it with its very own Dual Shark Fin Fan technology to prevent overheating issues and improved heat dissipation system, aiming to enhance hardware performance.
HUAWEI claims that the laptop also innovates and evolves the fan control algorithm, improving user experience with improved 55% efficient heat dissipation, lowered temperature, and reduced noise of 22dB low noise even without an external cooling pad.
Keyboard and Touch Pad
The HUAWEI MateBook D 16 2024 offers a full-sized keyboard with enough space between keys for extra comfort. It uses the soft landing design to provide 1.5mm key travel distance of each keys.
One great addition to the full-sized keyboard layout on the laptop is the inclusion of a numeric keypad and handy physical shortcut keys.
The shortcut keys grant quick access to functions like opening the calculator, returning to the home screen, initiating AI search, and quickly toggling the camera on and off.
On the upper right corner of the keyboard is the power button that doubles as a biometric fingerprint scanner with Windows Hello support for secure and convenient access to the laptop.
The built-in white LED backlights on the keypads are incredibly handy for working especially in low-light environments, and you can easily adjust them by pressing the F3 button.
I like how each key gives out a satisfying response, making the typing feel smooth and comfortable.
The touchpad boasts a decent size that allows it to perform the various built-in gesture support. So far, we get a smooth performance which makes scrolling and swiping on the touchpad hassle-free.
Next to the touchpad, there’s an NFC reader for Huawei Share. It allows you to connect other devices via NFC for seamless content transfer and enabling multi-screen collaboration.
Display
A standout feature of the new HUAWEI MateBook D 16 2024 is its bigger 16-inch IPS display with support for a 16:10 aspect ratio. This display strikes an excellent balance between portability, large screen real estate, and enhanced productivity.
The 16-inch display is ideal for graphic design students who needs to take full advantage of the ample screen space for any creative tasks like creative layouts, video or photo editing. Plus, it’s excellent for professionals handling large spreadsheets, presentations, and engaging in video conferencing. Beyond work, the screen is very well-suited for entertainment, offering an immersive experience for watching favorite content, browsing the web, social media posts, and gaming.
The two side bezels are more slimmer at 4.6mm except for the top and bottom which are slightly raised resulting a higher screen-to-body ratio of 90%. Floating at the top center of the display is a punch-hole type webcam for your video calls or online meetings.
The resolution of the screen offers a 1920×1200 pixels at 141PPI, a 1200:1 contrast ratio, 60Hz refresh rate, and a rated 300 nits peak brightness.
In color reproduction, it boasts with over 100% sRGB coverage, offering a broader range of colors. However, the 45% NTSC color gamut on the display has limitations in color representation, which might disappoint users requiring more color-critical applications for professional content creation. Yet, if color accuracy isn’t a top priority, the large display still provides a satisfying visual experience for everyday use, catering to different needs.
No need to worry about using the laptop for extended periods! It’s equipped with TUV Rheinland Low Blue Light (Hardware Solution) certification and DC Dimming, ensuring a nearly constant, flicker-free display. These features aid in protecting your eyes and reducing eye fatigue during prolonged use.
Performance
In terms of its internal hardware, our review unit of the Huawei MateBook D 16 2024 features the highest-end variant, boasting a 13th Gen Intel Core i9-13900H processor with clock speeds reaching up to 2.60GHz.
If you’re on a tight budget but still interested in this 16-inch model, there are three different variations available. These include models equipped with the 13th Gen Intel Core i5-13420H processor, the 13th Gen Intel Core i5-12450H processor, and the 12th Gen Intel Core i5-12450H processor.
The powerful Intel processor is paired with an Iris Xe integrated graphics, a bigger storage of 1TB PCIe SSD and 16GB of LPDDR4x RAM. Good thing that it uses an LPDDR4x RAM which consumes less energy and has more power-saving capabilities than prior generations of RAM.
I appreciate how HUAWEI offered an abundant memory and storage capacity, ensuring smooth performance even when running demanding applications or multitasking on this device.

Camera
The top-mounted camera captures photos at a decent quality of up to 1MP (1280×720 pixels) and can records videos in 720p resolution at 30 fps. In the camera app you also have face detection for improved focus, a barcode scanner, HDR Pro, and a photo timer to enhance the photo-taking experience.
The camera includes AI features and various video effects for smooth, fun, and productive video calls. It offers users to change their virtual backgrounds during remote calls and Enable Eye Contact to adjust your gaze on video calls. There’s also a Beauty mode to enhance your appearance, and Auto-centering to keep everyone in the camera’s center.
Effortless and Swift Productivity
The MateBook D 16 2024 is supported with HUAWEI’s another well-known proprietary IOT technology, the HUAWEI Super Device. This great innovation connects various HUAWEI devices like smartphones, laptops, tablets, and more, for a seamless interaction among them. It streamlines work processes much easier, enhancing productivity by enabling smoother and faster interactions between devices.
You also have a Multi-screen collaboration that pairs any HUAWEI device to either Mirror, Extend, or Collaborate. The Mirror duplicates your laptop screen on a connected device. Extend Mode turns your tablet into a second screen for your laptop. Collaborate Mode lets your MateBook’s mouse and keyboard work with the connected device and share text, documents, or images between them.
The SuperHub is another great feature that will help reduce the trouble of moving files, text, and images, as well as sharing files across devices. Users just simply long-press on any text, image, video, or file then drag it to SuperHub’s floating window to store it as temporary files. Next, these can be dragged out and placed on the app you want to share it. SuperHub will save the files you added in the last 50 drag and drops.
The MateBook D 16 2024 has a cool feature called Personal Voice Enhancement. It removes background noise when you use it with earphones or Bluetooth headphones through the audio jack or USB-C port. This feature works with apps like Zoom, WhatsApp, and Telegram, and using Clean Voice, it makes your voice clearer during calls using AI noise cancellation tech.
Connectivity
As for connectivity, aside from the decent selection of ports on the MateBook D 16 2024 it has Bluetooth 5.1 to connect your wireless Bluetooth devices such as your external Bluetooth speakers or wireless earbuds.
With the Bluetooth 5.1, it uses less energy, boosting your laptop’s battery life, and offers better stability with fewer interruptions and connectivity problems.
The MateBook D 16 2024 features HUAWEI’s very own proprietary technology the Metaline Antenna, ensuring a more stable connection with its ultra-long-range capabilities. This antenna enables connectivity up to 270 meters, minimizing false signals in an area without walls and disruptive objects present. The laptop obtained the SGS five-star Wi-Fi signal capability certification which serves as proof of its highly effective technology.
I tested the laptop’s connection outside of our house to gauge its performance. Normally, other laptops struggle to connect at that range, especially when the Wi-Fi router is located inside the house. However, with the MateBook D 16’s Metaline Antenna, we were able to enjoy a seamless connection and could stream YouTube videos at 4k resolution.
Software
The HUAWEI MateBook D 16 runs on the latest Windows 11 Home version 22H2.
A handful of pre-installed applications on the laptop include Spotify, WhatsApp, and LinkedIn.
Gaming enthusiasts will appreciate the laptop’s inclusion of the Xbox PC Game Pass app which grants them easy entry to a wide game collection, featuring new titles from Xbox Game Studios. It is all available for a subscription fee of only P119 per month.
The laptop comes with Microsoft Edge as its default web browser, but you still have the option to download and use Google Chrome if you’re much more comfortable using it. Additionally, you can access various other apps you need, including the latest games, streaming apps, creativity tools, music apps, and more, through the Microsoft Store app.
Snap Windows is a nice feature on Microsoft that allows users to quickly arrange and organize open windows on their desktop by snapping them to different sides, top or corners of the screen. It enables users for a better productivity when multitasking by resizing and positioning windows for efficient use of the large 16-inch screen space of the laptop.
Battery
The Huawei MateBook D 16 2024 gets an upgraded battery from its predecessor, now featuring a 70Wh capacity compared to the previous 60Wh. This new model supports a 65W USB-C charging power adapter, but note that the attached 5-foot cable is non-detachable.
After a 30-minute charge, the MateBook D 16’s battery initially reached 28%, and then, within the next 50 minutes, it increased to 75%. It took us around 1 hour and 49 minutes to fully charge the laptop from 0 to 100%.
