Unboxing
For its packaging, Kingston chose to depart from the conventional thick cardboard box design for the 2024 Mini Dragon USB Flash Drive. Instead, it is encased in a stylish and adorable dragon egg design for its packaging.
The cute case is made from durable polycarbonate plastic material which comes in two parts. First, the base features a cracked egg design in a matte finish with a white color. It showcases the Kingston logo and highlights the 128GB storage capacity printed on the front.
The top cover egg shell design is transparent that allows you to view the enclosed Mini Dragon that’s positioned at the center within another layer of clear plastic material.
At the top tip of the transparent cover, you’ll find a ball chain and a warranty card attached.
Opening the plastic egg case is easy, just simply remove the two tapes on each side and gently lift the top transparent cover.
Build Quality and Design
As soon as we get our hands on the Mini USB Flash Drive, the adorable dragon immediately captivated us with its signature Kingston mini collection design incorporating the same classic ovular shape design.
This lovable, rounded green dragon features a tiny yellow horn and green wings that sits atop a white cloud.
The mini dragon’s overall body material features a smooth rubber casing, offering protection of the files stored inside the USB drive against accidental drops in any direction.
For portability, the tail is designed as a key ring loop to put your ball chain making it easy to carry files anywhere and everywhere.
To access the USB thumb drive, you simply need to pull out the mini dragon’s punk gold hair. Additionally, the USB plug features an all-matte gold finish. You’ll find a printed Kingston logo along with the indication of its 128GB storage capacity on the USB plug.

Performance

Kingston claims that the 128GB storage is able to store over 8 hours of 1080p videos, approximately 36,000 high-quality photos (at 3.5MB per photo), a million pages of Word documents, or up to 30,000 high-quality songs.
It also features a USB 3.2 Gen 1 interface that can delivers speeds up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0, reaching up to 200 MB/s.
The Mini Dragon USB Drive is still user-friendly and compatible with USB 2.0 or USB 3.2 Gen 1. It can be used on all traditional operating systems such as Windows 11, Windows 10, Mac OS (v. 10.12.6 +), Linux (v. 2.6x +), and Chrome OS.
We measured its read and write performance using Amorphous Disk Mark 4.0. So far, we got good results on the 64GB capacity, it’s capable of reaching maximum reads at 231.48 mb/s and max write speeds at 91.46 mb/s which is more than Kingston claims on the transfer speeds of the device.
We also tried to transfer 5.31GB of files which includes videos and photos from my MacBook Pro directly to the Mini Dragon USB Flash Drive using a USB dongle. It took us around 2 minutes 31 seconds to complete the file transfer which is still very fast.
