MediaTek Attains Strong Growth Rate Success, Launches 5G Satellite Chip, And Still Top Mobile Chipset Supplier

Last June 20, MediaTek held its second MediaTek Virtual Coffee Session in the Philippines thru a livestream event on Zoom.

MediaTek is one of the four largest fabless semiconductor global companies in the world that currently powers more than 2 billion devices a year and is a strategic partner of major global companies in general and influential brands in the Philippines.

Present during the virtual media event are from MediaTek executives: Mr. Finbarr Moynihan, Vice President of Corporate Marketing for MediaTek; Mr. Chinlin Low, Technical Director of MediaTek APAC region; and Mr. Cedric Chang, Deputy Director of Corporate Sales, Southeast Asia.

The three local spokespeople from MediaTek was able to share insight, updates and progress development of the company.

Business Updates

MediaTek has had a very strong revenue growth rate, increasing from about 8 billion USD in 2019, to more than doubling with an impressive number of 18.5 billion USD in 2022.

In 2022, the mobile segment accounted for approximately 54% of MediaTek’s revenue. Smart Edge Platforms – including all other multimedia and connectivity platforms that MediaTek provides such as TV connectivity, smart speakers, smart displays, smarthome, tablets, Chromebooks, etc. about 39%. MediaTek’s Power IC, account for about 7%.

As the semiconductor industry and the world emerge from the global pandemic, some inventory issues have built up due to semiconductor shortages and as consumer spending has become more frugal during the pandemic. This has and will cause some challenges in 2023. Therefore, MediaTek’s revenue in Q1/2023 only reached $3.3 billion, down 11% compared to Q4/2022.

Mobile Market Share

On the side of the mobile industry, MediaTek continuously holds Top 1 mobile chipset supplier in 2021 and 2022, according to data from analytics company IDC. Although in 2021, the semiconductor industry experiences supply problems during the worst semiconductor shortage period, MediaTek still does a great job in managing user demand and supply issues and keeping market share is 41-42%. In 2022, this rate may be slightly lower, but still greater than 35%.

However, in the 4G segment, MediaTek lost some market share in 2022, but now we are working hard to regain it. With all the challenges in the industry, MediaTek still retains the No. 1 position in the mobile market and MediaTek will continue to make better efforts to maintain this position going forward.

Some recent products that MediaTek has introduced to the market: In November 2022, MediaTek launched the 2nd generation flagship product Dimensity 9200 – the product was well received in terms of market share. This product has helped MediaTek reach more than 20% of the Android flagship market share in China by 2022, compared to 0% in 2021, and the company intends to continue investing in the flagship line in the near future.

The premium tier with the latest announcement – Dimensity 8200, is also achieving certain successes. In the flagship and premium segments alone, MediaTek has done a great job, with highly optimized and integrated solutions, while competitors often use older generation flagship products for this segment with less success.

With the mid-range high-end series, MediaTek also recently launched Dimensity 7200 with TSMC 4nm technology on Arm v9 CPU cores and brought some selected features such as camera features from the ultra-premium segment into mid-range devices.

Some recently launched devices using MediaTek chipsets in the market such as: vivo X90, vivo X90 Pro and OPPO Find X6 are equipped with Dimensity 9200; folding phones such as OPPO Find N2 Flip, Tecno Phantom V Fold are equipped with Dimensity 9000+ chip; as well as the MediaTek chipset found on high-end tablets such as the OnePlus Pad.

Recently, MediaTek launched a new chipset version of Dimensity 9200 and the Dimensity 9200+ series, which is seen as a upgraded version of Dimensity 9200. With this chip, MediaTek has increased the CPU core clock frequency computing to about 10-11%; graphics are also significantly increased by 17%, which corresponds to a 10% increase in the benchmarks, whether the Antutu or Geekbench or even the graphics benchmarks. This is an enhancement to the Dimensity 9200 series that expands the performance possibilities. And users will soon see a number of phone companies launch devices based on this new platform in the near future.

Chromebook

Chromebooks have been through an interesting cycle of seeing a dramatic increase during the pandemic, as more institutions transition to online teaching and people study from home or take classes online. MediaTek’s Kompanio Chromebook has been doing pretty well, although sales have fallen a bit over the past few quarters due to inventory challenges similar to other segments of the market, but MediaTek is still optimistic that Chromebook is a very innovative proposition for a lot of users in the future laptop category.

MediaTek is currently the second largest ARM-based Chromebook solution provider and the number one ARM-parts Chromebook supplier. Because of its low power usage, built-in SoC, and ARM technology, Chromebooks are actually a very different solution than traditional notebooks, such as being capable of providing all-day battery life, in some cases is more than twice as long as the classic X86 notebook. This will bring advantages in terms of environmental protection. Thanks to the multi-core architecture, MediaTek Kompanio excels at multitasking faster, increasing the time to launch an application faster, they also tend to be thinner and lighter, fanless and silent. Thereby saving more costs and creating more affordable laptops, not only for education and children, but also for consumers and even in the commerce with high-end lines.

With MediaTek Kompanio, the company has a full solution roadmap from input solutions, which can be more applicable in the education segment, typically the Kompanio 500 series and the end of last year, the Kompanio 520/528 brought significant power increase in that category, like 80% faster on single-core and signal processing, 15% faster on multi-core and 20% faster on graphics. MediaTek has also launched the Kompanio 800 and Kompanio 1000 series, targeting high-end, mid-range and even premium Chromebooks, for general consumer use, and even in commercial applications.

MediaTek Genio and Dimensity Auto

Currently, the IoT platform that MediaTek currently has is MediaTek Genio and it has all kinds of products, from low-end to high-end, that can support with the Genio platform.

Dimensity Auto really consists:  Auto Cockpit, Auto Connect, Auto Drive, Auto Components, all of them are brought into car apllication. Pleasure to Partner with Nvidia, 2 companies work together to bring the best technology of each company to the car.

5G Satellite Innovation

Another exciting technology that MediaTek introduced this year is satellite connectivity – 5G NTN, with the launch of the first 5G satellite chip enabling the world’s first smartphone with 5G messaging service. Mobile networks currently cover just over 60% of the world’s population and less than 12% of the planet, and there are still a lot of dead zones and gaps around the world. With 5G NTN, we can cover this entire area. 5G NTN has standard tools IoT-NTN and NR-NTN. MediaTek will begin rolling out IoT-NTN to consumers to enable devices beyond terrestrial coverage. The company will introduce IoT-NTN for 5G messaging service in its first satellite chip. And by the end of next year, MediaTek will put its NTN in smartphones to enable voice calls and also some data browsing in remote areas.

With this first satellite chip, MediaTek won many global awards at MWC, CES and also received a lot of good feedback from the leading technology media around the world. With this satellite chipset, MediaTek is now working with Motorola to bring users a device equipped with 5G-NTN on Motorola Defy Satellite Link, which can be connected to all satellite/Android phones to allow consumers to stay connected existing things in an efficient and cost-effective way, or connect an Android smartphone to a satellite.

In general, MediaTek has enjoyed very strong revenue growth thanks to its diversified product portfolio over the past few years, largely due to the adoption of 5G and the shift to the flagship and premium segments in the mobile segment. Despite some short-term business challenges this year, MediaTek is actively investing in new areas for growth, some of which are Chromebooks and IoT, as well as consumer broadband for automotive operators, 5G, fixed wireless access, ASICs for business and industry. As a company, MediaTek continues to really focuses on the global market. Therefore, MediaTek looks forward to seeing more growth drivers coming from Southeast Asia as it moves forward over the next few years.
