Design & Build Quality

Granted that this is an entry-level phone vivo didn’t made the Y02s design and build quality just an average level but made it more appealing.

First, the color variants that are being offered are probably the best shade options in the market. We like the Vibrant Blue color which we got for our review, when light illuminates the back panel it radiates a pattern of dancing waves with a glass-like mettalic brush effect appearance in different hues of color from blue to green.

There’s another available color the Flourite Black should you want a more classic or professional look.

Next, the back panel and frame is made of durable plastic material. It gets a smooth texture with the single lens and LED flash housed in a rectangular camera module with a vivo logo located at the bottom left. The effect and texture of the back cover seems to lessen fingerprint smudges.

Last of all, the vivo Y02s grants a much slimmer thickness body at 8.19mm and weighs only 182 grams. The glass display features a 2.5D a nice slight curvature on its edges. With all of these it makes it lightweight, comfortable and beautifully shaped with having no problem holding the phone even with just one hand.

On the top you have the SIM card tray while the USB-C, microphone, headphone jack and speaker grille at the bottom. Volume rockers and power/sleep button are found on the right.

Triple card slot (2 Nano sim + MicroSD)

The front bezels are minimal but still slightly visible at the sides as well as the top while a small noticeable chin at the bottom. The front facing camera sports a dew drop notch design.

Overall, the very fine aesthetics of the vivo Y02s provides a premium, trendy and slim design that you can proudly show off or impress others.

Display

The vivo Y02s offers a large screen size of 6.51-inch HD+ Halo Full View using an IPS display panel with a resolution of 1600×720 pixels.

The size of the phone’s screen is large enough to enjoy any multimedia content on the device.

The display is considerably bright, text are sharp, colors are accurate, decent contrast, viewing angles are good and so far no color shifts happened during our test.

You get less visibility on the display if you try to use the phone outdoors during direct sunlight.

It has adaptive brightness that automatically adjusts the screens light intensity based on the lighting conditions where you use the phone. To prevent eye strain it also filters out the harmful blue light.

In general, the vivo Y02s presented us a decent screen experience.

Hardware

For its internal components, the vivo Y02s is equipped with a 12 nanometer Mediatek MT6765 Helio P35 octa-core processor, 3GB RAM and 32GB eMMC 5.1 storage type that’s expandable up to 1TB via microSD for more additional space.

The Helio P35 is coupled with a PowerVR GE8320 operating at 680MHz an entry-level GPU which can still work for some casual games.

Audio of the Y02s mostly are coming from the bottom firing speaker grille and it lacks bass but you get clear vocals.

Camera

With the nice price point value of the vivo Y02s, we were not expecting too much from its rear camera. You’ll get a pretty average camera setup on the vivo Y02s with a single 8MP main camera with LED Flash and a 5MP front camera with Aura screen light for your selfies.

On the camera app you have a few available shooting modes like the Beauty, Photo, Video and Time Lapse.

For video recording you can shoot either in 1080p resolution or 720p, which is not bad according to the price segment of the phone.

The phone’s camera can take decent photos under well-lit environments or during bright conditions but the quality tends to struggle on low light conditions.

Here are some sample photos and videos captured using the vivo Y02s.

Software

Software on the vivo Y02s runs with Funtouch OS based on Android 12. The UI offers a clean and refreshing visual experience with sharp fonts, good design of its app icons, dark mode, a lot of widgets including several customization options.

You have some pre-installed apps like Agoda, Facebook, Foodpanda, GCash, Grab, Lazada, Shopee, Spotify, TikTok and vivo’s very own proprietary apps.

It also has some additional useful features like Easy Share to easily switch your old phones apps, files and photos instantly to your new phone.

iManager can optimize or keep your phone in good shape such as cleaning the device, data management or protecting it against malware or virus.

If you’re a casual gamer the vivo Y02s is equipped with Multi-Turbo 5.5 to boost performance to prevent lags or stutter for smoother gaming experience. While the Ultra Game mode brings out a game shortcut sliding function to enable background calls, enhanced the sound or notification alerts to ease out disturbance during gameplay.

Security

As we’ve mentioned on our first impression article, the vivo Y02s supports Face Wake a facial recognition feature to safely unlock your device. Setting up the Face Wake is simple and takes just a few seconds to finish it.

It’s incredible fast but once the scanning is successful you still need to swipe up to enter.

For additional security, you can opt for the regular screen lock with swipe, pattern or PIN.

Battery

In terms of battery power, the vivo Y02s is built with a 5,000mAh battery and now uses a USB Type-C cable plus the inclusion of a regular 10W fast charger inside the box. The long-lasting battery of the vivo Y02s is very essential if you are stuck to your screen watching movies, playing games, using it for work or even for online classes.

vivo claims that you can stream YouTube videos up to 18 hours on a single full charge, 20 hours of music in Spotify and 7 hours of intensive gaming.

During our charging test, a 15-minute charge will get the vivo Y02s an initial 10% charge and after 30-minutes the battery goes up to 30%. It took us almost 2 hours and 50 minutes to have the battery at full charge from 0 to 100%.

Based on our usage with the vivo Y02s we’re convinced it offered us a good battery life.

If you’re a light user this phone can be extended almost one and a half or probably maximum of 2 days. After we had it at full charge, we left the phone on our desk around 3 days on standby due to the constant launch events we attended. From 100% we were left around 38% battery and during those three days we only open it to check some of the features as we go on to finish this article. Now during heavy or continuous use on the phone it should easily last a whole day.
