Review: vivo X70 – ZEISS Co-Engineered Imaging

We got the latest X-series from the leading global smartphone brand vivo just a few days before its official launch this October. Introducing the vivo X70 still equipped with advanced mobile photography technology from ZEISS, the global leader in optics and opto-electronics.

The vivo X70 does offer some new upgraded features from its previous model the X60. Now, let us find out more about the vivo X70 and check out the new set of features especially the performance of its camera that’s co-engineered with ZEISS.

Packaging and Contents

The packaging of the vivo X70 comes in a square-shaped retail box with a leather-like finish in dark navy blue color making it quite premium. Plus, it has a nice engraved X70 logo found on the top cover with the ZEISS logo below it.

Opening the box you’ll get the following contents:

  • Vivo X70 unit
  • 44W FlashCharge USB Adapter
  • USB Type-C Cable
  • Earphones
  • 5mm Headphone Jack Adapter
  • Protective Clear Jelly Case
  • SIM Ejector Tool
  • Documentations

Design and Display

The vivo X70 comes in two available colors Aurora Dawn and our review unit the Cosmic Black. Right side buttons we have the volume rockers, power/sleep while you have nothing on its other side.  On the top you have a secondary microphone, IR blaster and the word “Professional Photography.” Below holds the SIM card tray, main microphone, speakers, and USB Type-C port.

There’s a hidden front in-display fingerprint sensor as well as ambient light & proximity sensor, front camera, and receiver found at the front display. While at the back you can spot immediately the rectangular shaped triple camera module together with the laser focusing sensor, rear flash & color temperature sensor and a vivo logo. Bezels all-around the X70 are very slim with curved edges which makes it easier to tap buttons or keyboard keys with your thumbs.

The back panel of the vivo X70 feels so good to touch because of the new Fluorite AG technology that offers a nice satin finish making it elegant and a premium smartphone the moment you hold it.

The vivo X70 has a 6.56-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with a resolution of 2376 x 1080 pixels. The screen has an adaptive refresh rate that can run either 60Hz or 120Hz which can be set automatically by selecting Smart Switch option. It supports HDR10+ content especially if you want to watch on Netflix or Amazon Prime Video.

As we’ve mentioned, the vivo X70 has an AMOLED display which produced those very nice vibrant colors, sharp details and deep blacks. The nice thing about the display as it gets a SGS Eye Care Display and SGS Seamless certification which offers protection for your eyes.

Hardware and OS

Under the hood, the vivo X70 is equipped with a MediaTek Dimensity 12000 processor with leading 6nm chip design and Arm Cortex-A78 up to 3GHz with 2X l2 cache. Internal storage offers a large 256GB and a 12GB memory with an extended RAM feature of 4GB.

Out of the box the vivo X70 runs Android 11-based FunTouch OS12 with some pre-installed apps such as Shopee, Lazada, GCash, Facebook, iQIY,  TikTok, Agoda and Spotify.

For connectivity, it supports 2.4G/5G Wi-Fi MIMO; Wi-Fi 5 and Wi-Fi 6; Wi-Fi Display, Bluetooth 5.2, USB Type-C, GPS, OTG, and NFC.

Camera and Video

The camera would probably one of the best strengths of the vivo X70 which is again co-engineered with ZEISS. The built-in camera lenses have a certified compliance to ZEISS T coating reducing stray lights and ghosting effects.

The triple camera lenses are positioned vertically comprising of a 40MP main camera, 12MP ultra-wide angle and a 12MP portrait lens. It has several scene modes you can choose depending on your photography needs, you get night, portrait, photo, video, 40MP, panorama, live photo, slo-mo, time-lapse, PRO, AR stickers, Supermoon, documents, Astro and Pro Sports.

In the portrait mode, you can capture professional portrait shots with its four different portrait style bokehs inspired by its iconic ZEISS lenses: Biotar, Sonnar, Planar, and Distagon. These style bokehs can create a certain visual appeal prominently visible in the separation and blurring of the backgrounds like ‘swirly’ harmonious bokeh with any dappled background, which appear to rotate around the subject.

In night mode, you can select the scene mode you want either in Supermoon, Astro mode or opt to disable it. Get more creative with your night shots with the available multi-style night filters like the Black & Gold, Cyberpunk, Dreamy Spotlight, Blue Ice and more.

Selfies offers a 32MP camera lens with a punch-hole design on the front that captures very clear images with nice decent colors as well.

Here our sample photos taken using the vivo X70.

For a maximum stability to capture videos or night shots, it comes with an optical image stabilization via the Ultra-Sensing Gimbal 3.0 camera accompanied with a bespoke Sony IMX766V sensor. Capturing videos on the vivo X70 can record in resolutions of 4K, 1080p or 720p with frame rates you can choose in 24, 30 or 60 fps. You can also select the the amount of stabilization either Standard, Ultra or turning it off.

Security and Battery Life

For a layer of security, you have an In-display Fingerprint sensor which unlocks the phone very fast plus other device security options like screen lock, face unlock and smart lock. You can customize the animation styles or icon patterns of the in-display fingerprint scanner.

The vivo X70 packs a 4,500 mAh battery that draws its power through a USB-C port that comes along with a 44W FlashCharge power adapter.

Juicing up the vivo X70 was very fast, we got a 31% increase battery in just 15 minutes and after 30 minutes it got an 88% battery charge already. It only took us 1 hour and 10 minutes to attain a full charge on the X70.

Conclusion

The first thing we loved about the vivo X70 is the quality and performance of its camera. Thanks to its bigger sensors with ZEISS optic technology photos are quite clear, you get vibrant colors and pack in plenty of details as well. Selfies also came out clean and sharp with loads of detail but gets a little hazy when you use portrait mode because of the beautify filter, so I suggest you toggle the right settings.

You also get features such as its gimbal camera stabilization, assorted filters to get you more creative in your shots like the multi-style night filters and ZEISS bokeh filters.

Aside from the camera you still have a barrage of features like the AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate, MTK Dimensity 1200 processor, 12GB memory, large storage capacity, 44W FlashCharge, and a smooth stable OS. So far there’s little to complain about.

As for the price, we still don’t know what will be the official SRP of the vivo X70 but based from its previous model the vivo X60 5G sells at PHP34,999. So, we think it would still be possible that vivo will sell the unit at around the PHP30K price range given the upgraded specs. We will keep you updated once we get the official price of the vivo X70.
