Review: Vivo V5 Lite

Review: Vivo V5 Lite

What’s in the box?

First thing we’ve noticed on the packaging of the Vivo V5 Lite is that the design is very simple and the material used is not cheap looking. We experienced a little difficulty in opening the box but our advice is to open it slowly. Because once you already open the box it will show you the Vivo V5 Lite in all its glory. If you are not cautious enough while opening the box the phone might drop instantly. Inside the box you have a XE100 earphone, microUSB to USB cable, USB power adaptor, SIM Ejector, Documentation (Quick start guide and Warranty manual) and a free clear protective case. Vivo also included a free protective film in the box but this is already applied on the phone, making sure that the display is already protected. Although the phone supports on-the-go (OTG) connection, we noticed that Vivo didn’t include a MicroUSB OTG Cable in the box.

Display and Design

The Vivo V5 Lite has a 5.5-inch HD IPS touch screen display at a resolution of 1280×720 pixels and for maximum protection encased with corning gorilla glass. It has a unibody-curved design that makes the phone very comfortable to hold. While the metallic texture back cover, made from a high polymer material, makes the phone a premium feel and sophisticated look.

Along the front display on top you can see the location of the front flash, earpiece, 16MP front camera, light and proximity sensors. Below you will see the home button, back button and the background apps button that has no touch button light.

On the top of the phone it is free from any buttons or ports. Right side of the phone you have the volume control buttons and the power button. One feature that I find it very useful by setting and holding on the volume down button is Smart click. You can set and immediately open the following functions without using the power button first such as: Turn on/off flashlight, Record, Open camera app, Open Facebook or Enable app which allows you to choose any app you like to open.

In the left side you have the card tray and the pin jack. While at the bottom located are the speakers, MicroUSB slot, microphone and a 3.5mm headset jack to plug in the XE100 earphones. At the back you will find the 13MP rear camera, flash and the Vivo logo on the metallic cover.

User Interface

The Vivo V5 Lite uses its own customized Android operating system called the Funtouch OS. One thing we love is the Quick Control Center which give users easy access to the sound levels, brightness control, flashlight, Wi-Fi, mobile data, calculator and more by just swiping up from the bottom of the screen.

Another available customization found on the Funtouch OS is the iTheme app, where users can choose some pre-installed or downloaded theme to change the wallpapers, fonts or lock screens. Vivo already included four themes that you can use: Gold, Aqua, My House and Serenity.

Another feature of the OS we find very useful is the S-Capture for easy access to record your screen or take a screen shot of your phone. You can choose from Screen recording, long screenshot, rectangular and funny screenshot.

Another Vivo innovation is the Smart Split feature. If you get a text message while you are watching a video, just click the icon of the messenger located on the top right once to split the screen in two. You can reply to the message in one half of your screen while still enjoying your video in the other. Resizing either the message or video screen is also possible if you want the other bigger.

There are still more smart features we tried with the Funtouch OS that we find it convenient like the iManager, VivoCloud, EasyShare, iMusic and more which users can take benefit.

Camera

The Vivo V5 Lite gets a 16MP main front camera with an aperture of f2.0 and a 13MP secondary camera at f2.2 aperture opening. It has a built-in flash at the back and located beside the main front of the camera, another added feature from Vivo, called the “Selfie Softlight.” This softlight allows you to give a soft radiant light during those less ideal lighting conditions when you take your selfies.

We tried using the soft light feature to capture some of our test selfies. During bright conditions, it can take some nice selfies with great color and exposure even without the soft light. Using the soft light on low light conditions might help get a little good exposure to your selfies but you will notice a little noise on your photos. You can have better selfie photos with the aid of its beautification features to produce a more appeal to your shots. On the 13MP rear camera it really did good on taking photos especially outdoor, it has nice exposure, sharpness to detail and color.

Opening the camera app you will see some shooting options that you can use, choose from Panorama, Face Beauty, Take Photo or Videos. On videos it saves on MP4 format at 1080p as it offers nice quality, good colors as well, sharp details and a good dynamic range.

Performance

So far the performance is good during our test, the Vivo V5 Lite has a 1.5GHz Octa-core 64-bit processor and a 3GB memory with a built-in 32GB storage that is expandable up to 256GB. But with the pre-installed software that comes on the phone it already consumes 9GB and you have 22.85GB of space left to use. We never get to encounter some lags or crashes on the V5 Lite.

Another thing that we liked on the Vivo V5 Lite is the audio quality; it’s pretty decent and the speaker packs a lot of boosts on high volume. Even the staff from our office thought that we were using a bluetooth speaker.

Battery

With a 3000mAh battery that sports the Vivo V5 Lite, it does have good battery performance. At 20% we were able to watch some videos from YouTube, check emails, update our social media, took some photos, some call and text before the battery was drained.

Then we started charging the phone, after one hour your phone is already at 40% charged and it almost took us three and a half (3 ½) hours to get the phone at 100% full charge. If you are doing heavy mobile data and serious gaming then expect to bring a power bank with you. You can try checking out their battery saving feature that the Vivo V5 Lite offers.
