There are a lot of portable hard drives available in the market offering different features into the device and even making it more stylish to cater some customers who wants this kind of aesthetics. One brand known to offer this kind of products is Transcend Information, Inc., the Taiwan–based company principally engaged in the manufacture and distribution of memory products since 1988.
We review one of their portable storage devices the Transcend StoreJet 25C3N Extra Slim 1TB which garnered an award in the 2018 Taiwan Excellence.
Unboxing
The front packaging is very simple, the first thing you’ll notice is the plastic window with a peek of the portable hard drive itself as well as the color and the very slim thickness of the drive. Looking at the back packaging you can see the full specifications, other useful information, possible capacity of the storage that can store into the drive plus more about the product and the company.
Inside the packaging you get the StoreJet 25C3N Portable Hard Drive, USB 3.0 cable, Quick Start Guide, Warranty Card and some Transcend brochures.
Design and Build
The StoreJet 25C3N is built with a compact aluminum alloy enclosure with chamfered edges and a matte-like polished sandblasted paint finish available only in Iron Gray color. With the kind of quality, the portable hard drive adds a more premium look and feel plus it gains protection against fingerprint smudges. On the top left you have a very nice Transcend logo embossed.
The 2.5-inch SATA portable drive has an ultra-slim thickness of 9.95 mm and weighs just 136-gms. It is very lightweight making it a perfect travel companion and easy to store in your backpack or bag taking only a minimal space on it.
Close to the end, near the Transcend embossed logo, we have the USB-Micro connection port and to the left we have the activity LED for Power On or Busy Status indicator.
Transcend Bundled Software
The StoreJet 25C3N comes with its free Transcend Date Elite Management software that you can backup and restore, encryption and decryption, synchronization and cloud backup to your Google Drive or Dropbox.
You also have the RecoveRx utility which allows users to retrieve important photos that have been deleted by accident and other features of the software includes a formatting tool (SD/MMC and CF memory cards) plus a password locking tool for an added extra layer of security for SD and CF card only.
Test Impressions
We used the following laptop specs for our test on the StoreJet 25C3N:
- Model: Lenovo Ideapad 320
- Processor: Intel Celeron CPU N3450 @ 1.10GHz
- Storage: 500 GB SATA HDD
- Memory: 4GB
- OS: Windows 10
We transferred around 10GB of files into the StoreJet 25C3N, it took only about 4 minutes to complete the transfer while a 140GB files took us around 1 hour and 20 minutes.
You can only transfer/save files using a PC device, compatible to any Windows 7, 8 and 10. If you are using a Mac, you’ll be able to see the files but you cannot transfer/save files into the device. But you will have to reformat the StoreJet 25C3N to be able to use it on a Mac OS X or you can have it on both operating systems.
For our benchmark test, we chose to use only the AS SSD Benchmark tool because it’s simple and portable utility helps us measure the effectiveness and performance of any solid state (SSD) drives. Please pay more attention to the sequential reading and writing speeds.
