Review: Philips Momentum 275M2CRP gaming monitor

Wide-curved monitors are becoming more popular than ever. Aside from having a nice curve design users are choosing this type of monitor as it provides for a more immersive experience.

Watching high-quality entertainment content or playing games on a wide curved monitor helps to form a sense of depth and an extensive field of view making it an advantage for stern gamers.

study conducted by ResearchGate found out that curved monitors are well good for the eyes reducing eyestrain, improving focus, and lessening blurred vision compared to a flat monitor. And for that long competitive gaming sessions, a curved monitor decreases eye fatigue and offers better color consistency.

A wide curved monitor also improves productivity at work a great device for multitasking. They have wider screen space for users to open multiple tabs at once or view windows side-by-side.

With that being said, we have with us a hands-on review of the latest wide-curved gaming monitor from Philips Monitor the Philips Momentum 275M2CRP model. Let’s unbox and see what are the nice features sporting this amazing curved display.

Unboxing

The packaging box of the Philips Momentum gaming monitor is made of thick double-walled cardboard-type material. This is the type of packaging material used in shipping boxes containing heavy products. It also has a plastic handle to carry the box.

All sides of the box are printed in full color with a large photo of the 275M2CRP, the Philips logo, and the unique selling points of the product.

Before unboxing please follow the instructions found on the top of the box to remove the monitor and its accessories safely without damaging them or yourself.

Accessories

Monitor encased in a styrofoam

All items inside the box are well protected and particularly the monitor which is encased in Styrofoam packaging.

Inside the box, you get the following contents:

  • HDMI Cable
  • Power Cable
  • AC Power Adaptor
  • Display Metal Stand
  • T-Shaped Metal Base
  • Curved Monitor
  • User Documentations

Assembly

Setting up the monitor is very easy. As a safety reminder, you still have to keep the monitor face down in the styrofoam for the base installation. This is to protect the monitor from scratches or other accidental misfortune that may happen.

Gently attach the metal stand and T-shaped base, then using your fingers tighten the screw located at the bottom of the base.

Lightly attach the stand to the VESA mount until the latch locks to the stand which you can hear a snap. Do not press down the stand to the monitor very hard to avoid damage.

After attaching the base you may now slowly remove the monitor from Styrofoam and erect it with both hands.

Design and Build

On the front, the screen has thin bezels all around the top and sides except the bottom part which is more raised. Placed at the bottom bezels are a Philips logo, a Momentum logo, and a single power LED light indicator which glows a bright white.

With its 16:9 aspect ratio and an aggressive 1000R curvature, it puts users at the center of the action providing a pleasant wider field of view effect. It’s particularly good for racing games, flight simulators, and first-person shooter games that provide a better panoramic viewing experience and comfort to the eyes.

Tweak the angle of the curved display for a comfortable view from a -5 to +20 degree vertical tilt and supports up to 110mm height adjustment.

The back cover of the monitor is made of durable plastic material and its frame is typically made of aluminum. The stand and base are made of metal which is sturdy able to support the curved monitor and durable for long-time use. Found at the top center you’ll immediately spot a debossed Philips logo.

The monitor is equipped with a standard 100 x 100 mm VESA mount for an aftermarket arm or wall mount.

Ports and Control Button

Found at the back of the monitor are the various ports and control buttons.

The ports available for the 275M2CRP model are an AC/DC power input, two HDMI ports, DisplayPort input, and an audio out at the bottom right.

On the left side holds a Kensington anti-theft lock and the control buttons. There’s no support for a USB-C or USB-A port.

The control button serves as your power button to turn ON or OFF the monitor. It also operates like a joystick to let you adjust or select the functions of the monitor through an on-screen display (OSD) interface.

Here are the following functions of the control button:

  • Press to power ON the display
  • Press and hold for 3 seconds to power OFF the display
  • Move the joystick to the right – access the OSD menu and confirm the OSD adjustment
  • Move the joystick down – adjust the game setting or adjust the OSD menu
  • Move the joystick up – change the signal input source or adjust the OSD menu
  • Move the joystick left – access to SmartImage Game/SmartImage HDR or return to the previous OSD level

Display

The curved screen offers a wide crystal clear 27-inch QHD display with resolutions of up to 2560 x 1440 pixels and a high pixel density of 109 PPI (pixels per inch).

You get a higher refresh rate of up to 240Hz to play the most intense engaging action-oriented games for an ultra-smooth and lag-free gaming experience.

For a broader spectrum of colors and contrast the monitor supports High Dynamic Range (HDR) for this model.

The IPS panels offer a good clear view from both horizontal and vertical angles at 178 degrees.

Serious gamers will be pleased with this gaming monitor as it features an AMD FreeSync Premium to pair your Radeon graphic cards for a smooth tear-free gameplay experience at peak performance. Checking on the manual, the AMD FreeSync Premium is compatible with graphic cards from R9 290/300 series and R7 260 series.

The 275M2CRP monitor covers 120% of the sRGB color space, so if you’re watching sRGB content you can be sure that the colors will be accurate without having over-saturation. It’s good for photo or video editing also with an Adobe RGB of 98% you’ll be able to work with a large color space.

The peak brightness amounts to 300 nits which are bright enough for the monitor to perform under normal lighting conditions. The contrast ratio is 2,500:1, which is more than the standard for IPS panel monitors.

OSD Features

Accessing the OSD will allow end users a set of additional features to toggle with. It can further optimize screen performance or simply adjust other settings needed for the monitor like audio, input source, language, etc.

The OSD has 11 main menus with each having its very own sub-menu. The main menu comprises the following: Game Setting, LowBlue Mode, Input, Picture, PIP/PBP, SmartSize, Audio, Color, Language, OSD Setting, and Setup.

Here are the notable menus that we liked on the OSD.

The game setting has a fast Moving Picture Response Time (MPRT) of 0.5 milliseconds to eliminate smearing and motion blur in fast-moving games to create a sharper and more precise image from the screen.

For a good connection and faster response between your controller and the screen of the Philips Momentum gaming monitor it features a Low Input Lag feature.

When you activate the HDR display settings on your device, the monitor will let you have access to the SmartImage HDR under the picture menu. You may now select the best optimal HDR setting for that certain content. It offers users five HDR modes:

  • HDR Game – Optimize for playing video games. The gaming scene is more vivid and reveals extra details. Good for FPS games which easily spot enemies hiding in the dark corner and shadows.
  • HDR Movie – Deliver better contrast and brightness for a more realistic and immersive viewing experience on an HDR movie.
  • HDR Photo – Enhance red, green, and blue for lively visuals.
  • DisplayHDR – VESA DisplayHDR certified
  • Personal – Customize settings in the picture menu.

To get the best visual clarity and viewing comfort whether you’re watching videos or playing games. The 275M2CRP has a SmartContrast feature that automatically analyzes the content you’re displaying to adjust the colors and control the backlight intensity of the monitor.

To protect your eyes, the monitor offers LowBlue Mode setting to reduce harmful shortwave blue light from the screen that may affect vision over time.

Moving the joystick to the left will open the OSD for the SmartImage Game feature that provides users with several preset options to optimize the display for different types of gaming content. You can select based on the game scenario you’re playing from FPS, Racing, RTS, Gamer 1, Gamer 2, LowBlue Mode, EasyRead, or Off.

The benefit of having a wide curved monitor paired with a MultiView feature will definitely improve your productivity at work. The MultiVew feature will conveniently enjoy multiple content sources on your monitor. There are two modes available on the MultiView, you have Picture in Picture (PIP) and Picture by Picture (PBP) which opens a sub-window side-by-side of other signal sources.

Sound Quality

Audio on the 275M2CRP gaming monitor offers two 3W high-quality stereo speakers built underneath the bottom of the display.

The sounds are mostly coming out downward firing that produced average audio quality. They are pretty loud if you max out the volume. The speakers deliver a clear vocal output and handle treble well. We would sometimes hear a slight presence of bass but still lacks that deep oomph we wanted.

I would recommend connecting your wired headphones or external speakers to the audio output for a good sound experience to take your entertainment content from zero to hero.

Performance

The wide display size of the Philips Momentum 275M2CRP has plenty of screen real estate. I have enough room for my applications, open documents/spreadsheets, and activate the MultiView function to allow me to display media from different sources.

As a graphic artist, I liked the size and how wide this monitor is! The extensive dimensions of the screen are an advantage for me because when doing photo or video editing it helps me get work done much faster. The QHD display also ensures that images are crisp and text is sharp, without any scaling necessary.

Watching video content with a Quad HD display is so good and realistic especially if you go on full-screen mode. The images look very sharp, colors are accurate, nice contrast, and good viewing angles. The number of days we spent watching YouTube videos and various streaming apps on this monitor made us enjoy an intimate desktop movie experience.

After work, I would sometimes cope with the stress by playing my favorite PC/online games. The Philips Momentum 275M2CRP is also an excellent gaming monitor that boasts quite a number of features that can optimize or improve your game performance. It supports AMD FreeSync Premium to synchronize the monitor’s refresh rate to the GPU’s frame rate for a tear-free gameplay. The display offers a 240Hz refresh rate for smooth gameplay and fluid performance for those fast-paced games. You also have the SmartImage Game presets, low input lag, and 0.5ms MPRT to eliminate smears and motion blur.

The 1000R curvature of the display provided me with a more riveting gaming experience and gives an impact on my viewing angle. It’s more comfortable for the eyes as I stay focused on the screen. I also like when I played Asphalt 9 how the shape subtly creates a depth effect within the screen as I drive the car on the road.

The internal speakers can play loud and clear vocals but lack bass. I think they need to improve the built-in speakers on the next models. Good thing an audio output is available on the monitor, you can now connect a headset or external speakers to provide you with a better audio quality.
