Review: OPPO A54 (6GB+128GB)

Officially launched last May 28, the OPPO A54 is the newest A series model under the mid-range smartphone segment from the global smart device brand. With an affordable price of PHP 9,999.00 only the OPPO A54 is supported by a set of new features such as a large display, bigger storage capacity, faster memory, octa-core processor and a massive fast-charging battery.

Let’s get to know more of the OPPO A54 and find out if this might be the smartphone you’re looking for.

Inside the Box

Inside the box of the OPPO A54 you get the phone, USB Type-C Cable, Charger, SIM Ejector Tool, Protective Case, Screen Protector (Already Applied), Quick Start Guide, and Warranty Card.

There’s no earphone included in the package so you may have to reuse your old accessories. For us it’s a better solution to gradually remove like a power adapter or earphones to help address sustainable consumption issues or receiving unnecessary accessories with new phones.

Design and Display

The OPPO A54 has a nice elegantly crafted 3D unibody design and fits comfortably in your hand. It is made of polycarbonate plastic material and offers two available colors the starry blue and crystal black for our review unit. You may have to use the free protective jelly case as it does gather some few fingerprint smudges on the back.

At the rear, you have a premium glossy back cover design that gives the translucent black color a luxurious look together with a triple camera setup with LED flash in a rectangular housing and the OPPO logo.

On the right you have a side-mounted fingerprint unlock sensor clubbed with the power button. On the left side of the phone you’ll find the dual SIM card tray with a microSD card slot (expandable up to 256GB) and volume control buttons. While on the bottom you have the USB Type-C port, speaker grille, mic and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

On the front, the OPPO A54 offers a large 6.51-inch HD+ IPS LCD display panel with a 60Hz refresh rate and a resolution of 1600×720 pixels. Located on the top left you can spot the punch-hole selfie camera while at the center you have the receiver and ambient light sensor.

The screen-to-body ratio is around 89.2% and the bezels surrounding the device are acceptably thin except the bottom part which is a little bit broader. The display size is suitable for watching videos, playing your favorite games, browsing the internet and even posting or updating your social media content.

The viewing experience on the OPPO A54 is acceptable as it has nice dynamic colors, viewing angles are good, text on the display are sharp and readable. During outdoors when its bright and sunny the phone is still usable.

The OPPO A54 offers some features to keep a healthier comfortable vision such as Eye Comfort, Dark Mode and Auto Brightness. They also added a Screen Color Temperature option found on the display settings to adjust your screen to go cooler or warmer.

Performance

Expect that the OPPO A54 can perform very well in your everyday usage, it has a built-in 2.3GHz MediaTek Helio P35 Octa-core processor, PowerVR Rogue GE8320 graphics card, 6GB of RAM and a hefty 128GB storage which you can expand more up to 256GB thru the 3-card slot via a MicroSD card.

No matter what we throw in to the OPPO A54 whether we need to post on our social media, binge-watching on Netflix, answering emails, shopping online and playing online games such as Call of Duty, Mobile Legends and more. All those tasks we’ve mentioned was able to carry out very well by the device and it did not even crash. However, we do experience a little warm on the back during our gaming with the phone and a slight lag but maybe its due to our internet connection.

And if you wanna see some more figures or stats on the OPPO A54, here are the following benchmark scores that we got:

  • Antutu v8 – 116,020
  • Geekbench 5 – 167 Single Core / 987 Multi-Core
  • PC Mark – 4649 Work 3.0
  • 3D Mark – 278 SSE-OpenGL ES 3.1
  • AndroBench – 286.63 MB/s Sequential Read / 168.59 MB/s Sequential Write

You have basic connectivity features on the OPPO A54 like Bluetooth 5.0, Bluetooth Audio Codec (SBC, AAC aptX and LDAC), 2G/3G/4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, 3.5mm headphone jack, USB Type-C port and Dual Nano-SIM.

OS and Security

The OPPO A54 runs on ColorOS 7.2 based on Android 10 but it’s ready to upgrade to the Android 11 version as soon as they release its availability for this model. In the ColorOS 7.2, it has a few good customization and useful features we’ve come to like. Few notable functions we love are setting the icon style, gestures & motions, assistive ball, parental controls, split screen and game space to manage your gameplay on the OPPO A54.

Looking on the user interface the design looks clean and easy to use. There are some pre-installed apps already on the device like Lazada, TikTok, Agoda, Booking.com, Twitter, and Facebook together with the Google app services.

For biometrics and security, the OPPO A54 has a face unlock and a side-mounted fingerprint scanner that you can use it to unlock your screen plus other options like app lock or private safe. So far both security features responds and perform well without any disputes.

There’s also a Smart Lock feature that lets you keep your phone unlocked in some situations when it is in your pocket or when your near home.

Camera and Video

For the rear cameras, OPPO opted for a triple-camera setup for this device together with a ready LED Flash. It comprises of a 13-megapixel f2.2 main camera, a 2-megapixel f/2.4 macro camera and a 2-megapixel f/2.4 bokeh. For your selfies, it sports a 16-megapixel f/2.0 camera lens with AI beautification.

You get some decent quality shots of photos under the right conditions during a bright and sunny weather. The colors can be accurate at times, details are still present and the noise or grain are seen on the photo when you zoom it. Even in low light conditions you may get some hazy quality on your photos.

Capturing your selfies on this device will also get you some nice decent shots as well and those social media worthy photos to post on, but again during good lighting condition. There’s also an AI Beautification feature built on the camera app.

Shooting modes available on the camera app are Night, Video, Photo, Portrait, Panoramic, Macro, Sticker, Slo-Mo, Time-Lapse, Expert and Google Lens.

Here some sample photos we took with the OPPO A54.

If you’re going to shoot videos, the phone can capture at a resolution of 1080p at 30fps or 720p at 30fps. Video quality is good during bright and sunny condition but you’ll get more noise on low light situations. Optical stabilization is not supported on this device so you’ll experience some shaky video recordings especially if you’re going to use it for vlogs. We suggest to use a tripod or a gimbal to aid you to get a nice video recording.

Check out our video sample below on the OPPO A54.

Battery

Powering the OPPO A54 to manage and do all your task everyday is a massive 5,000 mAh battery and supported by an 18-watt fast charging feature using a USB Type-C connector.

After we completely used up all the batter and charged up the phone again. We monitored the charging activity, the battery got a 21% increase after 15 minutes, 49% after 30 minutes and 91% after 1 hour. Overall it managed to get a full charge in less than two hours.

We used the phone for almost a day and a half doing some calls, text messages, web browsing and checking our social media content. The battery drains a little faster during gameplay or watching videos constantly especially if the brightness level of the phone is at full.

Batteries usually degrade over time and drains fastly due to overcharging especially leaving it the whole night. Now, the OPPO A54 is equipped with Optimized Night Charging feature which lets the phone intelligently optimizes battery charge to reach 100% exactly at AI determined morning wake time.

Lastly, it also has Super Power Saving Mode which in times of extremely low power condition on your battery like between 5% to 10%. It lets a series of power-saving mechanisms and strategies to extend more your battery. In case you’re left with only a 5% battery you can have a 1-hour phone call.

Conclusion

With an affordable price of PHP9,999 only, the OPPO A54 gives you these nice set of built-in features from a large 6.51-inch HD+ IPS display; 5,000mAh battery with 18-watt fast charging feature; bigger storage capacity; faster memory; and a clean user interface.

If you’re not to conscious on the quality of the camera but would settle some of the features mentioned above. Then the OPPO A54 can, at the very least, meet your expectations in terms of other usage of the device such as watching movies, doing calls & texts, gameplay and more. Then its high time that we recommend and try the OPPO A54.
