Quick Review: Nokia C20 with Camera Samples

The Nokia C20 was officially announced by HMD Global last April 2021 as their latest budget smartphone under the C-series model. By June the Nokia C20 is already available in the market with a retail price of PHP4,690.

Let’s do a quick review to check out the features, performance and camera samples of the Nokia C20.

Build Quality and Display

Inside the box you’ll be receiving the Nokia C20 unit, Clear Jelly Case Protector, USB Charging Adapter, Earphones, Micro USB cable, Product Safety Info, Starter Guide and Screen Protector (already applied).

The Nokia C20 is made of a sturdy and high quality polycarbonate material that are made to last. Expect the Nokia C20 also gets its famous Nordic design elements marked by a sleek, clean, minimalist, reliable and stylish quality.

On top you have the 3.5mm port while located at the bottom the microphone and Micro USB connector. On the left side holds the Power/Lock key and Volume control buttons.

On the front, the display of the Nokia C20 comes with a 6.5-inch HD+ LCD+ display with a resolution of 720 x 1600 pixels and a aspect ratio of 20:9. The front facing camera is enclosed in a waterdrop notch design with the earpiece and flash beside it. The bezels all around the display are a bit thick especially at the bottom chin which you’ll find a Nokia logo.

At the back panel you have a circular rear camera setup design paired with a LED Flash, a Nokia logo at the center and the loudspeaker at the bottom right. For our review unit we have the Dark Blue color and another available color is Sand. The back panel can also be removed which reveals the available slots for the battery, dual nano sim and Micro SD card.

Software and Hardware

The Nokia C20 runs on Android 11 Go Edition it’s another version of Android designed to run on an entry-level smartphone. An advantage of the Android Go takes up less space for the Nokia C20 low storage capacity to acquire more apps and media files. There are no bloatware or even customized skins, what you get is pure Google stock Android apps. The only pre-installed apps that comes along is the Facebook Lite. You’ll definitely be familiar with the OS immediately the minute you use the Android Go.

The nice thing every Nokia phones offers to its users is a promise of a 2 years of quarterly security updates letting you feel comfortable knowing that your files, videos, photos and data are always safe.

The device is powered by a 1.5 Ghz Unisoc SC9863a Octa-core processor paired with a 2GB memory and 32GB of internal storage. The system already takes up a storage space of 6.24GB leaving you around less than 25GB for your files and apps. If the built-in storage is not enough, you can expand it more via a microSD up to 256GB to download more apps or media files.

And if you want to see some more figures or stats on the Nokia C20, here are the following benchmark scores that we got:

  • Geekbench 5 – 126 Single Core / 470 Multi-Core
  • PC Mark – 4349 Work 3.0. Performance Score
  • AndroBench – 39 MB/s Sequential Read / 117.22 MB/s Sequential Write

Camera and Video

The Nokia C20 offers a single-camera setup on its rear while the front facing camera in a V notch style. Both the rear and the front camera offers a 5MP with with an available LED Flash. You can shoot more closely to your subject with up to 4x zoom capability only.

There’s no astounding feature on the Camera Go app it’s just simple and all you need to control or use to shoot are easy to find. Shooting modes that you can select are Panorama, Photo, Video and Time Lapse. Other features found on the camera app are beautification, burst shots, HDR and location tags.

For videos both rear and front camera supports 1080p and 720p resolution at 30fps. Good thing they added a LED Flash for both cameras which you can use in case you are shooting in a darker place. OIS stabilization feature is not equipped on this device so expect you’ll get some shaky videos unless you have a tripod or gimbal.

Here are some photo and video samples using the Nokia C20:

Photo Mode / Outdoor – Sunny / 4:3

Photo Mode / Indoor – Sunny / 4:3

Photo Mode / Outdoor – Direct Sunlight / 4:3

Photo Mode / Outdoor – Cloudy / 4:3

Photo Mode / Outdoor – Bright Condition / 4:3 / with Rear LED Flash On

Selfie / Indoor – Bright Conditions / 4:3

Battery and Security

The Nokia C20 offers a decent 3,000 mAh removable battery. Yes, you’ve read it right a “removable battery” which some of you may or may not have experience using it. The back panel can easily be taken out to put the battery inside the phone.

Having a removable battery do have its advantages like whenever the device freezes you can immediately remove it, put it back and power up again. But remind you that this is a temporary fix but this might lead to damaging the internal components of the phone. Another benefit of a removable battery in case the it’s damaged it can be easily replaced if required.

Charging time on the Nokia C20 will take you almost 3 hours for a full charge.

For security there’s no fingerprint scanner on the Nokia C20 but it has a Face Unlock plus additional security features such as Screen Lock (Swipe, Pattern, PIN or Password) and Smart Lock.

Conclusion and Impressions

If you’re on a limited budget, an Android user for the first time or simply you want a secondary phone then you can choose the Nokia C20.

Although it has some older or less advanced features it still offers some noteworthy qualities. You get a solid built quality, smooth Android 11 Go Edition that’s clean and free from bloatware, a promise of 2 years’ security updates and a large display.

The Nokia C20 is also a nice device for your young ones because of the built-in parental controls feature so you can monitor their usage and screen time giving you an extra peace of mind. You can have the Nokia C20 as a fine gift for your parents/grandparents who will find the Android 11 Go Edition easy to use, clean and simple operating system.

On taking photos and videos, the Nokia C20 may not be the choice if you want to capture those social media worthy post pictures. At only 5MP we still got some good shots along the way but noise on the photos are visible especially on low light conditions but on a well lighted environment you may get decent shots plus the camera app is not too complicated to use.

On its battery, we were a bit happy seeing again a phone that offers a removable battery. My last experience of a removable battery was on my Nokia C6 it was again a trip down memory lane. But for the Nokia C20 the removable battery offers at 3,000mAh which can almost get you through out the day on its standby time. Continuous usage especially if your watching movies and the display brightness is on full makes the battery drain a bit faster.

Overall, the Nokia C20 has its ups and downs but did a fair good job during our test. So, if you’re not particular of the specs and want a budget-friendly secondary phone then the Nokia C20 might be suitable for you.

You can get the Nokia C20 in any authorized resellers nationwide or thru its official online e-commerce stores such as Shopee and Lazada Mall.
