Marshall Major IV – Unboxing, Initial Impressions, Price and Availability

Last year we were able to review the Marshall Major III Bluetooth headphones that offers a remarkable sound quality and a solid design. This time around the iconic British brand is launching their latest on-ear headphone the Marshall Major IV with an array of a few upgraded features.

So, let’s begin with the contents you’ll be getting out from the box:

  • Major IV unit
  • 5mm audio cord
  • USB Type C Charging Cable
  • User Manual
  • Safety Information

DESIGN AND BUILD

First thing we noticed on the look and feel of the Marshall Major IV is that almost nothing has changed, its appearance just about the same to the Major III.

It has the iconic vintage classic design with a white embossed Marshall logo that’s very much visible for other people who will notice the brand your wearing.

The Marshall signature black leather matte effect finish on the headband and thick padded ear cups are still the same material used like the Major III. The overall finish is nice and soft to touch making it a premium headphone.

The on-ear cushions surround mostly in your ear and makes it very comfortable when placed on top of them. Lastly it still has the black anodised 3D hinges that rotates freely to adapt to your head for a nice fit.

If you need to keep it or bring along the headphone in your travels, it features a collapsible design wherein the hinges folds’ down putting it safely into your bag.

Located at the right ear cup are the mic, a standard 3.5mm input/output, USB Type-C port to charge the device and the multi-directional knob.

It only weighs at around 165 grams which is much lighter compared to the Major III.

NOTABLE FEATURES

Some features added into the new Marshall Major IV now supports a USB Type-C port, Wireless Charging, and 80-hour Battery Life. Still some of the major features that operates very well that’s now a staple of every Marshall Major series are Music Sharing, Bluetooth Connectivity and a Multi-Directional Control Knob.

First, Let’s focus on the features that was kept for the new Marshall Major IV. The built-in multi-directional control knob is now located on the right side of the earcup close to the ports. The knob colored in a brass like material lets you play, pause, skip and adjust the volume of your device, as well as power your headphones on or off. Phone functionality can also be made such as answer, reject or end a call in a few simple clicks.

Aside from plugging the 3.5 mm port when you’re low on power, it also allows a friend to listen and enjoy to your music. By using an extra wired earphone or headphone you can also share your music when your using the headphone wirelessly.

Lastly, the Major IV can connect to any of your device via Bluetooth 5.0 with a range within 10 meters.

For Bluetooth pairing, during power on continue to push and hold for 4 seconds.

The Marshall Major IV now delivers 80+ hours of wireless playtime a major upgrade from the previous model that lasts up to 30+ hours on a single charge. They extended more or doubled the usage of this device which is impressive. Charging time for the headphone will take you 3 hours to get a full charge but a 15 minute charge can allow you for a 15 hours of wireless playtime.

Another major improvement would be its charging capabilities which is now equipped with a wireless charging feature. If you don’t have any Qi-compatible wireless pad there’s a USB Type-C port available. USB Type-C ports and cables are now found on all manner of devices especially on our smartphones, so it’s a good move that they upgraded the charging port.

To charge it wirelessly, simply place and rest the headphones with the right ear cap facing down on your wireless charger pad and the matte silicone piping on the ear cap ensures it won’t move around. The LED indicator will also light while charging, red through orange to green (0 – 100%).

SOUND QUALITY

The sound from the Marshall Major IV is still the best one for me, spending out more for this Bluetooth headphone is going to be worth it.

The quality of the audio was very clear, the bass delivers a rich heavy tone when your volumes are way up and even if at moderate volume levels are still there. We tried Sigma’s “Nobody To Love’ track that delivers powerful drums and bass, they sounded more thunderous and full to my ears.

On Modern English “I Melt With You” you can hear all aspects from the music. From the clear voice of Robbie Grey, the acoustic strums of the guitar to the higher-register percussive synthesizers are delivered with brightness and again with clarity.

If the price wouldn’t bother you, then the Marshall Major IV would be the better choice if you are looking for a bluetooth headphones with excellent audio quality, well-balanced sound and deeper bass.

Although, the Marshall Major IV doesn’t have any active noise cancellation feature, we could hear a bit of sounds coming from the other room or outside the house.

The call quality was outstanding as the voice clarity was clear and my voice on the other line was understandable as well.

Aside from music, the Major IV goes well when you’re watching movies or even use it for any online gaming apps. We didn’t find any delays on the connectivity, everything were in sync unlike other wireless headphones we experienced.

CONCLUSION

The new additional features built for the Marshall Major IV for us was a massive upgrade. You get the previous features you’ll already loved from the Major III such as the retro vintage design, multi-directional knob, music sharing and bluetooth connectivity. Now with the Major IV you get to enjoy more features that could do better with 80+ hours of playtime, wireless charging capability, its lightweight and a USB Type-C port.

The sound quality will definitely top from all of the features we mentioned and will always be a staple of any Marshall products. Just throw anything on the Marshall Major IV whether you’re listening to music, watching videos, podcast or gaming it always produce a rich, detailed and balanced sound.
