Mapúan filmmakers have once again made a remarkable impact on the Philippine cinema scene as their films take center stage in the prestigious 19th Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival. This event serves as a platform to discover, encourage, and support the exceptional cinematic works of Filipino filmmakers.
Among the 192 submissions received, two outstanding films by Mapúa AB Digital Film student Daniel Magayon (Maudi Nga Arapaap) and alumna Mae Tanagon (Sota) have emerged as finalists in the festival’s highly competitive Short Film Category. This remarkable achievement underscores the exceptional talent nurtured within the university.
In another groundbreaking feat, Professor She Andes, a faculty member of Mapúa, has qualified for the Full-Length Category with her captivating documentary film Maria. This historic milestone makes Maria the first-ever full-length documentary to be included in the festival’s main competition. This achievement adds to Andes’ previous accomplishment in 2019 when she secured a finalist spot in the full-length category with her film “Pandanggo sa Hukay.” The film portrayed the inspiring story of a small-town midwife, skillfully portrayed by award-winning actress Iza Calzado.
Audiences can look forward to experiencing Andes’ remarkable work and other compelling entries from August 4 to 13, 2023, at the Philippine International Convention Center in the CCP Complex.
“We take pride in the works of our students, alumni, and faculty. These recognitions are a testament to the world-class quality of our AB Digital Film and Media Studies programs,” said Benigno B. Agapito, Jr., dean of Mapúa’s School of Media Studies.
